While we were balling out at the Roots Picnic (pics and video to come!), there was some drama going on at the Hot 97 Summer Jam. Nicki Minaj cancelled her performance as the night’s headliner after Morning Show host Peter Rosenberg expressed some not-so-kind words about her “Starships” single and its level of hip-hopness. YMCMB president Lil’ Wayne took to twitter to announce the cop out, Nicki herself proclaimed her displeasure with the situation, Rosenberg only offered a quasi-apology –in other words it got a little ugly. In messianic God’s Son-fashion, Nas –not the biggest Summer Jam fan himself at one point –stepped in to save the day with a spur-of-the-moment appearance. Not only did Esco have the crowd rocking out to his own joints, he even brought out the one and only Ms. Lauryn Hill to do her thing. Without wanting to pour any more fuel into this wildfire, “Ready Or Not” and “Lost Ones” might have been what Rosenberg had in mind when he was referring to that “real hip-hop sh*t.” In other Nas-related news, he recently revealed the artwork for his upcoming Life Is Good LP, which you can peep after the jump.

I can’t front on Nicki for doing her thing gettin’ paid, but “Starships” is horrendous! It sounds like they just let the dance preset run on whatever cheap keyboard they bought for the studio and asked her to write to it. You can’t make cheap dance music for college bars and expect to be taken seriously as an MC (or an artist, for that matter).

Lauryn said a long time ago that she stopped believing in warming up her voice before performances; that its some method of hiding her true voice, like wearing makeup, or something like that.

I don’t follow Nicki Minaj’s life at all, not my taste in music. But someone tell me, this Nas and Ms Hill performance is the minute Nicki realized she’s SHIT right? not THE shit?
