When it rains it pours, y’all, another thing we have been waiting for with bated breath, Nas drops his video for “Nasty.” With its Queensbridge on-location shoot and looming towers, this visually echoes previous vids and photos but with a more conceptual twist as Nasir strips away the layers of floss to get back to the raw essence of his sound. As I’ve stated in these pages (pixels) I am such a stan for this song that almost any vid would be disappointing compared with the Wild Style/Warriors/Belly movie that is playing in my head, but director Jason Goldwatch definitely did his thing. Instead of making a bare bones video like every other broke-pocket director in 2011, he laid bare the bones one by one on camera.

    what is a ‘broke-pocket director”?

    • http://www.okayplayer.com Eddie “STATS”

A: most video directors in 2011. As people who been in this industry for a minute (hi!) know, the current financial situation of labels and artists simply doesn’t add up to the video budgets of yesteryear. what i like about this vid is that Goldwatch basically makes a liability into an asset because he made the video ABOUT stripping away all the bling and trappings we have been conditioned to expect from rap videos. we seem to be experiencing a little moment or back to the essence rap, of which this song is the ultimate example and i think thats what the vid is about, at least thats how i read it…

on the real doe…how many rappers u know could walk through their projects flossin’ like dat and not get ROBBED on principle? on the flipside, i could see a funny spoof of the video done where some cat walks through his old hood and gets robbed for his shit while he’s spittin’…ha ha…

@Eddie Stats I agree with you 100%. But this should come as no surprise to anyone, Goldwatch has been creating meaningful work for years.

    Peace,

I like this it looks like hip-hop is taking it back to its roots(I made a funny). With Nas setting it.

  • Ojos22555

Nas proving he’s easily one of the best lyrisists in the game. But I gotta agree w/ RealTalker; the shameless product placement is a disappointment.
