Video: Ma Dukes Announces New Dilla Project 'Rebirth of Detroit'
Some 5 years after we lost him to the deadly disease Lupus, love for the music of J-Dilla continues to be a unifying force in hip-hop. And that goes triple for his hometown of Detroit. Mrs. Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancy–mother to the legendary producer, who was born James DeWitt Yancy–has just announced the upcoming release of an album called the Rebirth of Detroit project, which will feature a selection of Detroit artists that Dilla knew and collaborated with in his lifetime, all performing over his productions. To be clear, those would apparently be unreleased Dilla productions, as Mrs. Yancy was at pains to point out that this was not a retrospective and that only new compositions would do justice to the rebirth concept. She and Associate Producer Jonathan Taylor also spoke eloquently about the fact that the Detroit hiphop scene has become so fragmented in the wake of his passing and the city’s larger troubles that Dilla’s music might be the only thing all parties could agree on. Us, too.
