New girl Elle Varner breaks down her debut single (and J. Cole duet) “Only Want to Give it to You” line by line and element by element. A Groove Theory-ish headbopper that shot instantly to the top of the OKP office charts, “Only Want to Give it to You” is one of those rare jams that merits such detailed attention. For instance, the fact that she wrote something that “sounded like a French folk-song” that was then transformed into a radio-ready groove with drum breaks and R&B bassline just makes us want to hear that acoustic version even more. By the time Elle threw on some jingling 80s earings and adorably nerdy horn-rimmed glasses to take us to school on the lyricals, we had already gave it to her. OKP’s heart, I mean (get your mind out the gully, son).
