This Black Star reunion is all too real at this point. I’ll admit I had my doubts, but this new Black Star album definitely should be impacting this year. But before we get all that, apparently their mixtape Aretha will be released in the spring. Last night, on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli performed their #BlackStarFriday surprise “You Already Knew” (which will be featured on the aforementioned mixtape). Watch above as they perform the Oh No produced jawn with The Roots. It doesn’t stop there, there’s more good ish after the jump. As a web exclusive watch them get into one of the best hip-hop songs ever made (no hyperbole) “Little Brother.” No, it doesn’t stop there either, double bonus time. After the performance check the clip of ?uestlove breaking down how the song came to be (y’all already know that’s Dilla).

why no tariq?? i dont understand he used to jump on ppls songs before but i dont see it anymore. this would have been the perfect song! he could have thrown some o.g. rhymes on this reminiscent of respiration remix. and they definitely could have used his back up on the hook!!

I’m preferring the live performances of these songs over the cdq versions. Just a different energy…. I guess that’s the way it should be but the art of a hip hop concert is dead. Kudos fellas good work. I’m feeling every aspect of the new work keep it coming…

I agree. This was nice. The way it should be-In fact, people giving killer, well-rehearsed shows (while mastering the art of improvisation) is one of the things that hip hop needs to “save” it. The other, of course, is originality. Hip hop started out as a live art form and needs to continue that way.Big shout to The Roots and Black Star. This ish gave me the chills, B.
Thanks Yasiin & Kweli for coming back!

“You Already Knew” is already on the top of my playlist with that new D’Angelo classic, “Another Life”. Got the same chills when I saw that both parties were back on the scene! Been waiting for what feels like eons to have them both back. Okay, ?uest…time to take a break from Jimmy and hit the road with the Ancient Future Festival, starring D’Angelo, Common, Erykah, Janelle Monae, Amel Larrieux, Black Star, Maxwell, Outkast, Esperanza Spalding and hoping against hope, Lauryn Hill–all supported by The Legendary Roots Crew!

Yeah, you’ll be exhausted…but practicing magic always drains a brotha. Let’s get it!
