Speaking of tributes and fallen legends, Adele took to her blog earlier today to share a small tribute to the late great Etta James who she has often namechecked as a major inspiration (watch a performance of “Fool That I Am” from 2009 above).
What a lady Etta James was. She was the ultimate original. Her voice was breathtaking and her songs are reflections we all recognize in some way or another. Its an honor every time I hear her voice. I saw her at B.B. Kings in New York a few years ago, and it was something I will remember forever. Thank you to Etta James. And I send all my love to her family and friends. xxxx – Adele.
The blues and rock n’ roll pioneer’s passing has inspired any number of tributes from Beyoncé to Kelly Clarkson and as often happens with such things, the pain of losing someone so important somehow pulls out of our scribes and singers some of their most eloquent work. To get a handle on what this woman’s life and music really meant for us, we heartily recommend Dwayne Rodgers tribute on L+T and dream hampton‘s reminiscence in Ebony.
