Tyler The Creator Expounds On 'Cherry Bomb,' Admits Some "White People Are Dicks"

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

In a new sprawling interview, Odd Future leader and MC prodigy Tyler The Creator opens up about his creative process, keeping in touch with Andre 3000 and his anxiety toward white authority figures. The interview, which appears in the pages of Billboard, focuses on the 24 year-old's latest LP Cherry Bomb, and teases some amazing post-hoc liner notes out of Tyler. "I made 'Smuckers' in 2011 and sent it to Jay Z and 'Ye. They were going to use it, but I kind of took it back. I was trying to make horn sections and drum kicks that sound epic."

The interview also reveals that Tyler and Andre 3 stacks exchange drawings every now and again, and that yes, there was indeed a slightly-too-young love interest in his life at one point--an experience that gave rise to Cherry Bomb's lead-off single "Fucking Young." But it's the interview's final question--one in which Billboard presses the young rapper about his take on recent police brutality stories--that's really counts. Tyler professes:

I don't like getting deep into that stuff, but [Oklahoma shooting victim Eric Harris] said, "I'm losing my breath," and they're like, "F--- your breath," and the dude died. That really made me say, "This is getting out of f---ing hand." Like, white people are dicks, and I don't mean as a whole. Even through the beginning of history, since people were writing down what was going on, Caucasian people have been assholes. It's crazy.

Peruse Tyler The Creator's full interview at Billboard--it's a fantastic read.
