Tune-Yards Gives Us Our Next Taste Of 'Nikki Nack' w/ New Track "Wait For A Minute"

Tune-Yards "Wait For A Minute"

Tune-Yards is releasing LP Nikki Nack on May 6th. Though the wait is not long, curator of the musical project, Merrill Garbus has leaked a new track that no one can complain about! Nicki Nack's lead single "Water Fountain"  (which was an exciting flurry of edgy spoken and sweet singing) channels the konpa music of Haiti that consists of complex rhythms and full instrumentation. The new single "Wait For A Minute" is a more laidback groove, that has a danceable backbeat and a catchy hook. The retro '70s R&B feel (ala The Pointer Sisters and Patti LaBelle) that is prominent on the track is the work of the well-rounded producer Malay. Frank Ocean's Channel Orange featured heavy production by Malay-- 13/17 tracks heavy!--as well as writing, engineering and instrumentation. The producer has also worked on John Legend's Evolver and Alicia Keys' Girl On Fire plus much more (Angel Haze, Big Boi). Garbus has showed that she experiments fearlessly with Tune-Yards sound, however, she has expressed that she was hesitant about working with this type of production, explaining:

"We were nervous to work with Malay, as we'd never had experience with producers before. But he quickly gave us confidence, teaching us to create a full sound while maintaining a very sparse instrumentation. The tiny details give the song depth, so the vocal is allowed to take up a lot of space."

The sparse instrumentation that Garbus mentions really does give her voice an epic place in the mix, the perfect pocket for her quirky and complex sound. The song, which is all about waiting for relief, begins with Garbus' treated vocals singing the hook; dropping into a bass heavy stream of sounds supported by a dense drum-machine and accented with a wobbling synth line. There are small moments of ticks and claps that exemplify Malay's attention to detail, Garbus' ability to adapt to the unknown and her knack for unpredictability.
