Pop music is a here today, gone tomorrow world. A starburst of YouTube notoriety and then oblivion. Or at least it is for most. But when your journey has been as long and extraordinary as Nneka's when you've travelled 10,000 miles and are still only just starting out - then instant celebrity is the last thing on your mind.
Mos Def opens up his set from last months' Streets 2010 Urban International Festival by showing love to his fellow followers of Islam. He starts off with a call and response intro "As-Salaam-Alaikum," then gets into his Ecstatic cut "Wahid."
News has arrived that Ski Beatz' long awaited, highly anticipated project, 24 Hour Karate School, will be arriving on September 7th. Here's the Creative Control directed video for Ski's " Cream of The Planet" featuring Mos Def. This song did appear on the original tracklisting, but I'm not sure if they've altered it after this long of a delay.
Mos Def is the latest artist to hop on Gil Scott-Heron's I'm New Here track, "New York Is Killing Me." You'll remember one of NY's other premiere emcees was on the 1200Squad remix we posted last month. Who do y'all think came through with better bars? Props to Jesse.

Earlier we got a glimpse at Mos Def performing a new song, "It Ain't My Fault" at the the Gulf Aid benefit in New Orleans. Mos has since teamed up with Lenny Kravitz, Trombone Shorty, Tim Robbins, and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band to record a proper version of the song. Above, check out a live version of the song that resulted from an all night jam session. You can donate to the cause here.
Never one to bite his tongue on the issues of the world today, Mos Def is the latest emcee to make a song about the recent catastrophic Gulf oil spill. Watch above for Mighty Mos' performance at the Gulf Aid Benefit concert in New Orleans. "The GULF AID benefit concert raised funds for wetland recovery efforts, fishermen and their families as oil continues to gush into the gulf." Props to 2-cent.com.
Over the weekend, an unreleased jawn from Goapele hit the net. This is an unreleased remix of her song, "Different," featuring Mos Def. The song appeared on her last album, Change It All, but the album version featured Clyde Carson. In the above vid, the Bay Area songstress talks about her upcoming album, Milk & Honey. The LP is said to feature production from Bedrock, Kanye West, Drumma Boy, Dan Electric, Mike Tiger, Bobby Ozuna, Malay, Jeff Bhasker, and more.
Last week we posted footage of Mos Def teaming with the Gorillaz for a performance on UK show, Later... With Jools Holland. Here is a solo performance from Mos on the same show from this past Friday's screening. Mos impressively man's the drums as he performs his The Ecstatic track, "Quiet Dog."
Here's a dope mashup to start your day. Max Tannone, the same guy who brought you Jaydiohead (Jay-Z & Radiohead remix album), now brings us his latest project, Mos Dub. The album consists of Mos Def verses over classic dub reggae tracks. I'm typically not into blends, but this came out real clean. You can stream/download the project below.
We all remember The Roots' stint on Nick Jr. show Yo Gabba Gabba. Now, Mos Def aka Super Mr. Super Hero tries his hand on the show (WOW @ that costume). Watch as Mos and co. try to rescue their lost friend Starsky through song and dance. I mean, if you have kids or younger siblings I'm sure they'd get some enjoyment from this.
Here is the latest leak from Ski Beatz' mixtape, 24 Hour Karate School. The song is entitled "Ariels" and features Stalley, Curren$y, Whosane, Terri Walker, and Mos Def."Taxi" is still probably my favorite joint from this project thus far, but looking at the tracklisting, I'm def looking forward to hearing some more of these collabos. 24 Hour Karate School will be out March 30th.
Damn, if you thought that "Taxi joint was a banger (it was), check out what else Ski Beatz' 24 Hour Karate School has to offer. Here's the CDQ of "Prowler 2" featuring Jean Grae, Jay Electronica, Joell Ortiz, and Mos Def. 24 Hour Karate School is said to drop March 30th. Chop Chop indeed.
