You already knew election day wasn't going to come and go without Nas getting his 2 cents in. Mr. Jones and DJ Green Lantern teamed up last night to put this one together, aptly titled "Elecion Night." Hip-Hop is really riding for Obama (have you noticed?). No excuses this year y'all, head over to them polls. It's 2pm on the East Coast, if you still don't know where your polling spot is, click here!!
88-Keys and Evidence team up in the latest OnDaSpot Freestyle from DJ Green Lantern's Invasion radio. To change things up, 88 puts a beat together on the spot while Ev kicks a rhyme over top. Both of these dudes got some bangers in store for November. 88-Keys' The Death of Adam drops 11/11 and Evidence's The Layover EP/DVD on 11/25, both via Decon (and both very dope).
DJ Green Lantern's much delayed Barack Obama Yes We Can: The Mixtape finally dropped yesterday. The tape is hosted by Russell Simmons and has an All-Star lineup including Talib Kweli, Kanye West, Wale, Busta Rhymes and many more. Hip-Hop is really making that 9th inning push for our man Obama. All the talk is cool, but let's make sure we all do our part on the 4th when it counts so all these mixtapes, t-shirts and PSA's don't go in vain. Follow me after the jump for the download link and tracklisting.
Yeah the colorful promos all over the site might be down, but Solange is still OKP's featured artist for the month of September. A while back, as a response to her lack of acceptance from the music biz, Solange put out this appropriately titled song "Fuck The Industry." She says it was inspired by the instrumental she is singing over (Kanye's "Everything I Am"). Now we have the DJ Green Lantern produced remix with Wale lending a few bars to the song. Check it out.
Once looked at as one of the kings of the LA underground sound, Murs is really getting a lot of mainstream love as of late. Good to see more people embracing his music. Here he is on DJ Green Lantern's Invasion radio for the OnDaSpot freestyle session. Murs For President is in stores September 30th.
While at the Boston stop of The Rock The Bells Tour, DJ Green Lantern interviews Jay Electronica for Karmaloop TV. Jay gives a little bit of his back story and why he thinks he stands apart from the other rappers in the game. The highlight of this interview is definitely the verse Green gets Jay to spit. Shit is hard, Jay then goes on to challenge any rapper that thinks they're on his level....Not too many rappers I'd bet on against Elec right now.
Immortal Technique stays giving back and supporting his community. In between crafting albums (like his new album mixed by DJ Green Lantern, The Third World, in stores June 24th) and working with community organizers, gangs, prisoners, parolees, soldiers, and youth in general, Immortal Technique has found time to launch a writing contest, directed at high school students in 9th-12th grades. Students are to submit an essay (500-750 words) on the topic of the U.S. relations to any "third world" country. Prizes are all in ca$h, and range from $1500 to $500. See the post for full details on how to enter!
I'm sure you are all as Ni@@ered out as I am, but Nas has some more new ish for us today. First the much talked about "Be A Ni@@erToo" video directed by Rik Cordero is here. Not much more can be said about the vid, you just gotta see it. It's long as hell though, and is basically a short film so get that popcorn ready. Hit the boards and discuss your outrage/approval with the vid. Nasir's mixtape with DJ Green Lantern also was released today "The Ni@@er Tape," I'm about half way through and it's pure heat, banger after banger. Shout out to the kid Legend for the links.
With Obama another step closer to making history, everyone seems to be coming out with their opinion on the matter. Nas of course has never been one to bite his tongue, so here is a preview of a new song of his addressing Barack Obama titled "Black President." It is rumored to be off of his upcoming mixtape with DJ Green Lantern "The Ni@@er Tape."
