Ava DuVernay's forthcoming film adaptation of fantasy and science fiction novel A Wrinkle In Time is slowly coming together.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon are in talks to join the cast. But at least one person has been confirmed to portray a character that is very, very important to A Wrinkle In Time's story.

Storm Reid will be playing the lead role of Meg Murry, the preteen heroine of Madeleine L'Engle's classic children's book.

The Newbery Medal-winning novel centers on Murry, a young girl traumatized by the disappearance of her scientist father years before. She finds herself on an interplanetary journey with a schoolmate and her younger brother to find her father. They are aided by a trio of supernatural beings: Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which.

Reid, who made her film debut in Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave, has primarily been involved in indie projects as of late: she was featured in Sleight, a sci-fi drama that was well received at this year's Sundance Movie Festival; and recently wrapped up a role in A Happening of Monumental Proportions, which serves as the directorial debut of actress Judy Greer.

Needless to say, Reid taking on the role of Murry could very well be a career altering move for her.

The upcoming adaptation marks a huge accomplishment for DuVernay. She'll become the first woman of color to direct a live action film with a budget upwards of $100 million. Not only that, but she'll be spearheading a project that is focused on bringing diversity to the big screen.

The characters of A Wrinkle In Time have often been portrayed as white, so it's refreshing to see someone like Reid filling Murry's shoes, and Disney seeking non white actors to play other characters central to the story.
