Madonna Will Perform A Prince Tribute At The 2016 Billboard Awards
It appears Madonna's selection for the Billboard Music Awards' Prince tribute isn't going over too well. Not that we can blame them or anything, as the very thought of Ciccone's withered growl on anything Prince-related is a fucking travesty. And while we don't even know whether Madonna's tribute will be of the sung or spoken variety, a recently-circulated petition won't even wait to find out, pleading with BMA to remove Madonna from The Purple One's tribute or feel the full brunt of 7,000-plus signatures. Currently, the petition has about 6,100 names to it, but by the show's broadcast (this Sunday, May 22nd,) could very well breach its 7,500 name goal.
To be perfectly honest, even with the signatures reaching the 7,500 mark, it's hard to imagine that Billboard will be making any last-minute adjustments to the line up, but at least we have the opportunity to express just how bitter the taste is in our collective mouths. None of which is to say that there's anything implicitly wrong with one icon tipping their hat to another, but Billboard can do better and perhaps should have reached for something other than the big name salute for what will prove to be the first televised tribute to Prince since his death on April 21st.
