The Burnt Sugar Arkestra recently introduced fans to their funk & roll splinter cell dubbed REBELLUM with the release of The Darknuss LP stream and accompanying video. The crew is lead by vocalists Mikel Banks and Shelley Nicole with a stellar lineup for the backing band including Jared Michael Nickerson, Hiroyuki Matsuura, Ben Tyree, Paula Henderson, V. Jeffery Smith, Lewis Barnes and Leon Gruenbaum. The band is joined by a healthy selection of special guests including Abby Dobson, Micah Gaugh, Kim Hill, Vernon Reid, Marc Cary, Ronny Drayton, Luqman Brown and more. The project described as "Grown & Sexy Avant Agit-Pop" features 20 songs including the title track, "Start Thinking Like An Afreakun", "Rock Star Amnesiac", "Chains & Water/No Coloureds Allowed" and other compelling titles that conjure afro-futurist ideals, pick at the lingering post-bellum wounds peppering the black experience and suggest, as REBELLUM's conceptualist Greg Tate has stated, that "The spirits of Sun Ra, Ron Hardy, Eddie Hazel, Gary Numan and The Emotions are all welcome here." Check the tracks below to listen to The Darknuss LP. Purchase the project via Bandcamp. Stay tuned for more from REBELLUM.
