R.I.P. BI.G. 14 years ago today Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G. met an untimely death. He would be 38 years old, and more than likely still would have a choke hold on the rap game right now. I still remember being 10 years old and running to the store to buy Ready To Die right when it dropped. All I listened to was hardcore ish, so I was in the early stages of my Wu-Tang standom at the time. When I looked at the tracklisting and saw that dude had a song with Method Man, it blew my mind. I must have played “The What” 20 times back to back before I could even get to the rest of the album. I use to see clips like the one above and get mad as hell that I was too young to get in the club and see dude live myself. Gone but never forgotten – what’s your earliest Biggie memory?

His radio songs were certified bangers, but there seemed to be something inauthentic as opposed to Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep & Nas’s street stories. Biggie had vivid rhymes and a unique voice but I don’t think he deserves “Greatest Rapper of All-Time” status with just 2 albums. Who’s to say, but I don’t think he had a business formula like the way Jay-Z did. He had a loose tongue that almost got him killed in Northern California. Look up the E40/Biggie conflict. Personally, I think he would have faded out. This discussion will be one for the ages.

His death was a tragedy nonetheless. I would have enjoyed to see Biggie evolve. R.I.P. Biggie.

My earliest Biggie memory was seeing the “Dolly My Baby Remix” and thinking, “this dude is the greatest rapper I ever heard”. Based off the strength of that one short verse. I had the same feeling when I saw Rakim’s “Microphone Fiend” video. RIP

Unbelievable was the first song I heard that got me to understand what flow is. In a way it was the first time I really “listened” to hip-hop.

Party n Bullshit was the first track I heard, borrowed the copy from another dj i was hangin out with at the time and thought, ‘wow, who is this guy’? then ready to die came out and i knew Biggie was gonna be somethin’ special. a true hip hop artist and pioneer, creative and talented with one of the dopest flows ever. hip hop would not be where it is without what he accomplished.

what is the meaning for B.I.G.

    • Hyzebrattic

I’m not really aware of it’s meaning but according to me B.I.G is a word of respect which was given to Biggie.
