Last night, on what felt like the coldest night in the history of time (outside without a jacket wasn’t one of my smartest moves), OKP held our 4th annual Holiday Jam at BB Kings in NYC. The line to get in was nearly a city block long, but I don’t think many were complaining after the show they were treated to. The night began with J.Period and DJ Soul warming the crowd up before Rahzel kicked it off with some amazingly tongue twisted, mouth spitting magic, all backed by the Mighty ?uesto. Slowly the rest of The Legendary Roots Crew took the stage. For nearly 3 hours they entertained the crowd bringing out guest after guest, including John Legend, Estelle, Chiddy Bang, Money Making Jam Boys, Melvin Van Peebles, The cast of Fela!, Yelawolf, Spree Wilson, and Aloe Blacc. Every last one of them held it down, but the highlight of the night for many in attendance was when The Roots brought out legendary soul sister Patti Labelle. PATTI LABELLE! Sure, she’s a true, bona fide legend (who’s currently playing Funmilayo Anikulapo-Kuti, Fela‘s mother in the Broadway show), but she’s a legend for a reason – she brought true magic to the stage. Singing “If You Only Knew” and “Lady Marmalade,” Patti was graceful, powerful, and purely fantastic. It was another memorable night, and we’d like to thank everyone that helped make it happen. For those of you who weren’t able to attend, check after the jump for a recap of the event through the lens of Mel D. Cole.
