Peanut Butter Wolf Remembers His First Encounters w/ Madlib & Mayer Hawthorne

Peanut Butter Reflects On Stones Throw's Most Prized Projects

As the founder and figurehead of Stones Throw Records, Peanut Butter Wolf and his stunning roster of the greats have built themselves a dynasty, hoisted up by immense contributions from some the greatest to ever do it. He took Madlib under the label's wing and saw him bloom into a legend, prolific beyond belief. He helped usher in the resurgence of underground titans like MF DOOM and provided a home for the late J Dilla, ousted and criminally under-appreciated by The Motor City in his prime.

A recent interview with HipHopDX, found the Stones Throw chief reflecting on his very first moments with Lib, forcing him to put his own aspirations of musical greatness to the side once he had identified that he was in the presence of a sleeping giant. Elsewhere in the chat, you find Wolf speaking to his initial introduction to Mayer Hawthorne (at the time, DJ Haircut) who had cut a two-track demo of what appeared to Wolf as re-edited soul standards, only to find out that it was Mayer on every instrument all along. And the rest was history. Watch as Peanut Butter Wolf reminisces over Stones Throw's most prized projects in the video below and keep an eye on us for all things dawning from the Pasadena camp.
