Video: Alicia Keys X Stevie Wonder, Goodie Mob, John Legend + More Live At Billboard Awards

The 2012 Billboard Music Awards went down last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and although there were no big shockers amongst the winners list–Adele reprised her Grammy sweep, taking home a ridiculous 12 awards–there were plenty of great performances for the history books. John Legend and Jordin Sparks performed a moving Whitney Houston tribute (below), Goodie Mob honored MCA & the Beastie Boys by throwing some “Fight For Your Right” into their “Fight To Win” (after the jump) and–most historically–Alicia Keys performed a duet with Stevie Wonder (above) as part of his recognition for this year’s Icon Award.

Audio: Fly Moon Royalty “The Birthday Song”

fly moon royalty birthday song artwork

Just four more days until Fly Moon Royalty will be releasing their FreEP, Dimensions (don’t say we didn’t warn you). To prematurely start the celebration, the Seattle duo hits us with “The Birthday Song” today. It’s not really a birthday song, but rather a plea for 365 cakes a year. Sounds about as sweet, too. Stay tuned for that EP, dropping May 22.

Video: The Park X Darondo Present: Happy Mayfield “Jesse James”

If that song qualifies as a “blaxploitation-nod” just for its bassline, this video is beyond headbutt. Bay Area rhythm section The Park hooks up with soul legend Darondo and roots hotshot Lee Bob Watson to form Happy Mayfield –indebted not only in name to that classic 70s sound. The group will be releasing a 7″ entitled Silvercloud Time Machine Project. And yes, the Jesse in this video for “Jesse James” is Jesse Boykins III. The Mara is Mara Hruby.

First Look Fridays: Columbia Nights

Columbia Nights is a production duo out of DC consisting of two guys, Hayling Price (keys) and John E Daise (bass). They caught our ear recently with a cover version of George Duke’s “Feel” (it seems Thundercat ain’t the only dude these days repping classic Duke). Their debut EP, Dusk | Dawn, just dropped this week. Their sound is an organic blend of analog and digital, soul and electronic, and ALL live instrumentation. Sarai Abdul-Malik is the featured vocalist on the EP. The group themselves say they’re “in search of a bold new approach to black music.” Intrigued? You should be. We think they’re onto something. Check out their EPK above, stream one of the EP tracks, “The Firmament,” below, and grab their EP via purchase links (also below).

Audio: The Black Opera X yU “Black Superstar”

artwork for the black opera - black superstar (produced by yU)

What we love most about the enigmatic Black Opera collective is that they combine their thorough knowledge of counter-cultural discourse with undeniably dope music. On this joint, they jump on a blaxploitation-nod courtesy of yU, which goes along nicely with their message about the ambiguity of black superstardom, most pointedly expressed in their own words:

Audio: Dice Raw “Dining Alone (prod. Khari Mateen)”

Dice Raw

After giving y’all a quick reminder on why he’s “The Illest,” Dice Raw returns with single #2, where he raps on that solo dolo life. Dice puts his solitary life into perspective with this solemn track “Dining Alone,” which was produced by Roots Crew affiliate Khari Mateen. Dice’s album, The Greatest Rapper Never: The Transformation, is coming soon via Raw Life. What’s good with the Dice x Statik Selektah project though? “Bloody Marry” was crazy.

Audio: Konfident “Bogart’s” feat. Sean Price & Oh No

Bogarts

Yeah, I unapologetically support just about anything with Sean Price‘s name attached to it. P is yet to spit a wack verse on record, and he continues that streak with this appearance on L.A. emcee/producer Konfident‘s track “Bogart’s” which also features Oh No (who also handles the production).

Video: Kendrick Lamar X Schoolboy Q X MTV Hive [Live]

MTV Hive and Yourstru.ly gathered a bunch of Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q fans together, sat them in a bus and drove them all to their little cabin in the woods. Luckily, Kendrick and Q were there too –else it would’ve been creepy. The Black Hippies gave a nice little intimate performance of a handful of songs, letting their crowd scream their “fu*k daht!”s and rep their crack baby-birthdates. Please note that the Schoolboy Q part of the gig seems to be down at the moment. We’ll update you if it turns up somewhere else.
