We already knew Dilla Day Detroit was legendary but now OKP TV correspondent Adrienne Williams has given us a video experience to match it. Besides some crazily overmodulated bass on Danny Brown‘s performance (can’t take that MF anywhere) we get a crisp, clean and classy highlights reel of the tributes, appearances and performances from Amp Fiddler, Slum Village, Chuck Inglish, Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat and Asher Roth as well as lobby-side interviews with Illa J, DJ Dez and more. While you are in the Dilla Day spirit (every day!) check this camera-phone footage of DJ Neil Armstrong throwing down at Donuts Are Forever 6 which went down here in BK over the weekend (after the jump, courtesy of the redoubtable Sam Champ).

  • oooooohhh..

some may take issue with this but I agree that J Dilla is one of the greatest, but I can’t say that he had the greatest MC’s on his beats. I’m just saying…

obv. the line-up info was kind of a work in progress but i believe the performance billed as SV was T3 and Illa J (and maybe a 3rd unidentified villager?) but somebody who was actually there, please jump in with firsthand info…

Eddy is correct….”SV” consisted of T3 and Illa Jay. I was at the Detroit show (actually stood in line next to that girl in the beginning with the Dilla tat on her chest). Great show, even without the headliners who were slotted to be there (Busta, Jay Elec, J Rocc, Phife). Hope to make the trip next year too.

The truth of this event was this (from a first hand account) This was a self made, homegrown event with next to no sponsorship or other considerable investment to make it happen. When Busta was unable to perform & Jay Electronica became a no show, Detroit artists stood up & more than filled the bill. The CATALOGUE of Slum Village (who has essentially reached ‘revue’ status as an act) consisting of Dilla produced Slum tracks was executed with precision and bravado by T3 & Illa J. Phat Kat did his fucking thing with Will Sessions (the instrumentalists behind ‘Elmatic’) & Guilty Simpson gave the performance of his life at this event. The end result was a few sour asses bitching about no busta and no jay, but the refund requests (next to none) showed that no one cared. Oh yeah, & when was the last time a civil rights Icon (Clarence Jones) & a state senator (Burt Johnson) were on hand at a hip hop event of this magnitude to co-sign. Put simply……..the most legendary night in Detroit Hip Hop history…..period …..end the conversation….STFU…..don’t even try to hate on it
