There’ve been some clever cross-genre conceptual mashtape projects recently but although they are often enjoyable and sometimes eminently listenable, rarely do they surpass their inspirations. But I swear the marriage of De La Soul‘s “Breakadawn” and Fela Kuti‘s “Water No Get Enemy”–recognizable to true Okayplayers from Common’s Like Water for Chocolate–on this found-footage teaser video for Fela Soul (above) might have more helium in it than the balloon mindstate original. And I fully realize that I just threw down a match on a straw floor saying that on OKP. Let me just hide from MJ and Smokey Robinson stans while the Okayafrica experts break it down:
Gummy Soul artist Amerigo Gazaway put together two towering greats in this 8-track, 33 minute, blend of afrobeat rhythms and hip-hop gems. The Nashville-based producer handpicked dozens of samples from Fela Kuti‘s illustrious catalog and combined them with 8 acapellas that span over a decade of De La Soul classics. Redman, MF Doom, and Gorillaz also made the cut.
