Okayafrica Audio: Petite Noir Spreads Love On New Single "MDR"

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Over and over, Petite Noir has proven himself capable of full-on sonic transformation. Shifting easily from fervent electronics to light sunlit acoustic strains, the Congolese-Angolan troubadour has proven to be nothing if not deep in terms of talent, and on his newest single "MDR," the third to drop off his upcoming La Vie Est Belle / Life Is Beautiful album, everything simmers with heat. A love song fed through the high-vibrance filters of afrobeat and post-punk, the track sways back and forth with the artful confidence of a Talking Heads song for the post-digital age. "MDR" follows the video release of "Best" as the latest offering from Petite Noir and, quite frankly, the odds-on favorite for his funnest release yet.

La Vie Est Belle / Life Is Beautiful will drop September 11 on Domino Records and, as Okayafrica noted, will showcase an expansion of his sound. Our colleagues had this to say about the album:

forward-thinking African aesthetic influenced by the likes of Fela Kuti, Tabu Ley Rochereau and Yasiin Bey. “It’s just the story their music tells and the sense of freedom,” the Congolese-Angolan artist adds, “It’s about seeing the positive in dark times.” Pre-order the album and listen to “MDR” below, plus check out Petite Noir’s upcoming tour dates and some of our snaps of him at Afropunk underneath.
