Dwayne Jeune was fatally shot in his Brooklyn apartment by New York police officers.

In a report from the New York Times, the incident occurred Monday when Jeune's mother called 911 and said he was acting erratically. Several officers then arrived and were let into Jeune's apartment in East Flatbush where the 32-year-old Carribean immigrant allegedly advanced on them with "a large carving knife." One officer tried to subdue Juene with a stun gun, shooting him twice. However, another cop opened fired on Juene when the stun gun failed to work, striking the mentally ill man in the chest and ultimately killing him.

Officers had been to Jeune's apartment before to help him but this time they encountered him wielding a knife, with Terence A. Monahan, NYPD chief of patrol, saying the "incident unraveled in seconds." The incident speaks to an ongoing problem with the NYPD in regards to its handling of people in severe mental crisis. The department plans to train 5,500 officers out of a total 36,000 uniformed personnel in what is called critical incident training for situations such as this, but some critics say that is hardly enough.

Prior to Jeune's death, there was the murder of Deborah Danner, a 66-year-old mentally ill woman who was fatally shot by New York City police supervisor, Sgt. Hugh Barry, in October last year. Since the shooting, Barry has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, first and second-degree manslaughter, and criminally negligent homicide, and could face life in prison if convicted of the most serious charge. He has also been suspended without pay.
