Hidden Figures Trailer

The black experience was on full tilt this year as movies (Fences), documentaries (I Am Not Your Negro) and television shows (Insecure) showcased the variety, flavor and unmitigated cool we represent in entertainment. Eking from underneath the shadow of #OscarsSoWhite, 2016 has shown to be a historic year for artists and creators of color, as a wide number of programs have hit #1 from Nielsens to the Hollywood box office.

To celebrate this occasion, the African American Film Critics Association held their annual awards ceremony. With numerous efforts in the running, Moonlight was considered one of the night’s best masterpieces. The film, which we also feel is one of the best movies of 2016, chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he experiences rough roads, pains and tribulations. The A24 Pictures film earned Best Picture, Best Director, Best Ensemble and Best Supporting Actor distinctions.

Janelle Monae was also a big winner throughout the night, as she won Breakout Performance for her roles in both Moonlight and Hidden Figures. “It was an exceptional year in terms of the quantity and quality of films about the black experience. And while this by no means solves the diversity issue in the film industry, it was a definitely refreshing to have such a wide-range of exceptional work to choose from to honor and celebrate with our approval,” AAFCA co-founder Shawn Edwards said in a press release.

Top acting honors went to Denzel Washington and Ruth Nega for this roles in Fences and Loving respectively.

“The number of incredible performances by black actors and actresses added to a very competitive field of performances and represents a step towards inclusion that our membership warmly embraces,” AAFCA President and Co-Founder, Gil Robertson said. The AAFCA will hold its eighth annual awards ceremony on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California.
