Mixtape Monday: NOw FUTUR's French Touch Tribute, Jannis Stürtz's Habibi Funk, Nas x AZ & More

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

It's that time again--time to put an ear to the very best new sessions that the world's hard-working DJs and producers have to offer. Mixtape Monday is back and is proud to premiere the French Touch edition of "Sims Samples," an incredible tribute to Daft Punk and the French electro scene at large, courtesy of the wild Parisians at NOw FUTUR. Beyond that, a set of nothing but Nas and AZ mashed up has us thinking that "Life's A Bitch" isn't such a bad motto after all. Additional sets from Kenny Dope, Dan Digs, the Soulection crew and so much more await, so keep your headphones locked in and prepare for take off.

The one and only Sims of French music collective NOw FUTUR has thrown down the electro gauntlet. His latest "Sims Samples" is a tribute not only to the legendary Daft Punk, but the French Touch dance movement at large and features some of the most crucial tracks in the entire genre, both modern and not-so-much. Opening with a textbook "then and now" blend of Daft tracks and the cuts they chopped up (we'll always love the way they flipped ELO on "Face to Face"), the hour-plus set is perfect kindling for your next funky dance soireé. All you need to do is press "play." Oui oui is right.

Jakarta Records' head honcho Jannis Stürtz never stops moving. From managing some of the most promising, progressive producers and MCs to voraciously crate-digging amidst his travels, the German is one of those cats that just seems to have more hours in the day than the rest of us. Thankfully, Stürtz is generous with all that hard work and has just shared his third mixtape of "Habibi Funk"--hard-grooving music picked from record bins across the Middle East and north Africa, then sewn up into a concise set for all of us to enjoy. From Morocco to Lebanon, most of the African Mediterranean coast is represented in the 37 minute session, which is sure to be some of the most satisfying and rare listening you'll enjoy all week. In Jannis's own words:

Earlier this month I was in North Africa for another digging trip and ended up finding quite some records I didn’t know before or I had no copy of so I felt it was time for another mix. After every mix I make I feel like „Uhh, getting enough records I like for the next one will be tough“. But every time I end up getting proven wrong by the rich musical heritage of Arabic musicians that worked on combining local influences with western musical traditions. Just like Dalton, the Tunisian band we just re-released on our new Habibi Funk label, who are also prominently featured on this mix.

Apart from the Dalton re-release that you can hear on our soundcloud we are working on rereleasing Fadoul’s music, Morocco’s answer to James Brown, who was also featured on the first two mixes. The artist himself passed in the early 90s but thru a countless number of leads we luckily ended up finding his family in Morocco, one of the highlights of my last trip but more from this later.

For now please enjoy the new mix featuring music from Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Lebanon. If you’re in Paris catch me playing some records at Institute Du Monde Arab on the 3rd of July…

Compiled by DJ Rhude and VIBE editor in chief Datwon, the new "Naz: The Flyest Essence" mixtape invites you to imagine a world in which Nas and AZ continued collaborating at the height of their powers and put together an entire album (maybe even a couple of them). Going much further than just "Life's A Bitch," the playlist is a beat junkie's dream, incorporating cuts from some of the greatest producers that collaborated with both Nas and AZ. In Rude's own words:

Nas and AZ's chemistry in the booth is undeniable as evidenced by their body of work over the years. Despite said chemistry, the two arists have never collaborated on a full length album despite the fans pleas for it. While it probably may never happen, Datwon (Vibe EIC) and I brainstormed about putting together a mixtape as a way of imagining how an album between the two could sound. As a result Naz: the Flyest Essence was born. Featuring beats from The Alchemist, Pete Rock, Large Pro, Sid Roams, Midi Mafia, Salaam Remi and many more.

Techno, funk, soul, house and even a touch of disco get their due from Kenny Dope in his new video-recorded live 45" set. Things kick off at approximately the 3 minute mark with nothing but tough-as-nails breaks, and given that it's shot from an above angle, you can see just how Kenny works the decks and mixer as he proceeds and continues to keep it proper. A Tribe Called Quest and Pete Rock and CL Smooth kick things off, and from there its nothing but onward and upward.

We're not about to front and claim to be up-to-date on our German hip-hop, but thankfully DJ P's "Rathelbecker Weg" mixtape provides an excellent catch-up session in the genre. These straight-from-vinyl Deutschland beats knock hard and the rhymes at least sound solid, on a surface-level phonetic basis, so plug it in and achtung, baby.

1. DJ P - Intro

2. Fresh Face - Crackrap

3. Wun Two - Genista

11. AdzudemSK - Eine Liebe Part II

From the opening bars of Thundercat's "Them Changes," it's clear that Dan Digs's latest Dash Radio show was destined for greatness. Soul wild card Van Hunt pulled through Digs's both to share a few choice selections and talk about his newest LP, and amidst it all we're treated to Chet Faker, Four Tet and more. It's a stellar update on the best modern grooves available, so tune in--we don't remember radio ever sounding quite so smooth.

Dubbed "Tired [of the] Scene Again," the mix is a selection of cuts that Average can't wait to play live in front of people--and the stuff is so infectious, we can't wait to hear it. Austrialia-based funk group Kerbside Collection teamed up with Wax Poetics earlier this month to drop a mixtape of some of their most-beloved tracks; songs they look to as key influences in their work as they spread hard-grooving music out of Oz and across the world. Their favorite songs are dope, that's assured, but even better is the original material that the group incorporated into the set. They had this to say about it:

A dusty jazz funk and rare groove DJ mix to coincide with the new 'Trash or Treasure' album. Cooked up by our man behind the pots 'n' pans - Paprika. A selection of sounds that help join the dots and showcase some inspirations and influences for the record. feat tracks from The Whitefield Brothers, Bobby Hughes, Placebo, The Stance Brothers, Unity Sextet, The Bamboos, UK Library sounds plus tracks from the new album.
