Mixtape Monday: Rhettmatic x Free The Robots x Plann.B Triple Premiere + More!

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Welcome back to Mixtape Monday--the last official one of summer. The warm weather may be winding down (supposedly), but things are staying plenty hot in these parts thanks to the brand new world premiere of a three-part mixtape event. Yes, Okayplayer is bringing you the debut of the newest SHIFT All City, a mix made in triplicate by DJs Rhettmatic, Free the Robots and PlannB dedicated to their ongoing work to bring hip-hop, electronica, house, soul and experimental sounds all under one roof. Deeper into the roundup you'll find Banksy-sanctioned sounds from Boca 45, a bit of 70s riff rock from Dope Folks, worldly sounds from Jakarta Records and whole lot more.

"We tried to put together a mix that would sound exactly like a typical night inside Shift...basically an hour of heavy musical ADD. I think we nailed it." That's how Plann.B describes the new hour-long, three-part SHIFT All City mixtape, a joint venture that has him welding his talents to those of Free The Robots and DJ Rhettmatic. In 2009, the three DJs conspired to create a new enterprise that doled out hip-hop, soul, futuristic funk and electro in a format that pulled no punches and honored no idols; a beat music free for all lead only by their brainiac techniques. 6 years on, Shift is as vital as it's ever been and has filled massive rooms alongside the likes of Dam Funk, J. Rocc, House Shoes, Soulection and more.

Summer 2015 has Rhettmatic, Plann.B and FTR taking their show up and down the West Coast, with shows booked in Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and more. Below, Okayplayer very proudly presents a free new mix designed to be a "thank you" for all the support Shift has gotten from the scene. "This is exactly what a night at Shift might sound like," Plann told us. "Enjoy this wild mishmash of boogie, disco, glitchy, experimental beats, breaks, future bass and hip hop."

With pleasure.

Sufficiently dark and, at times, almost saddening, Boca 45's live all-vinyl set from Banksy's Dismaland is an experience unto itself. Funky beats mix with warped bizarre vocals and give a sense of disorder. Something's not right at Dismaland, and Boca’s mix is quite correct in all its offness. Opening with funhouse mirror-level weirdness, things eventually do brighten, open up and become danceable. Here's what Boca had to say about it all: By the time Gang Star hits things brighten considerably…From Franco funk to proper wild style...

On Friday 21st Aug 2015 i was honoured to be asked to DJ @ the opening of Banksys new show "Dismaland" in Weston Super Mare - UK. The whole thing was amazing; if you get a chance to check it out i would highly reccomend it! My Mix started fairly Slow, Dark & Dismal but then people started dancing / getting down so i switched it up a bit about half way through..

We will never, ever grow weary of releases that pay tribute to Sean Price, the wildly talented Brooklyn MC that tragically passed away at the age of only 43 earlier this month. PF Cuttin took to the airwaves to eulogize his "best friend, my homie, Sean P" quite recently. "The best thing I can do is to keep his name alive, keep it going and play his music," Cuttin said before diving into over two hours of the MC's material. Purposely kept private until after the release of Songs in the Key of Price, the mix went out over East NY Radio and is both tender and tough-as-nails in its commemoration of a fallen great. RIP Sean--forever.

Jakarta Records once again ahs come correct with a trove of international psychedelia and funk, this time plucked from the crates of the middle east by Lebanese local DJ Spindle (aka Ernesto Chahoud. Chahoud has worked hard to found and further the mission of the Beirut Groove Collective, the oldest and only 45 rpm rare funk and soul party running in the Middle East. His new "Middle Eastern Heavens II" mix features disco and Arabic Funk of a top-tier caliber and should be at the top of your to-do list from this moment on.

Tough riffs, booming drums, righteous solos and plenty of not-giving-a-fuck is what went into Dope Folks's newest set, the brilliantly-titled "Beer Drinking Joint Smoking Summertime Biker Rock" mix. The sound is just as you'd expect it to be, and the ideal moment in which to play it? Well, you can probably figure that out too.

AM and Shawn Lee put forth an exceptional bit of work with Outlines, an album that blends the high-brow funk of early Air releases with roving soul and indie rock. Tasteful and cinematic in just about every aspect, the album is one of the sleeper highlights of what's already been an excellent year for independent music. To celebrate Outlines, AM has constructed "Proteus Mix 1," a new set sourced from his personal library records, soundtrack singles and all other sonic sources that fall far from the center of convention. You'll hear space disco that was clearly cut in the 70s but sounds like the beginning of a 2050 party on Mars--and really, what more could you possibly ask for? Okayplayer is very happy to present the mix's official tracklist, which AM had yet to release until now.

American electronic duo Odesza have fired off another of their "No Sleep" mixes, a series that seems to perfectly capture, again and again, the forlorn feeling of being stuck awake all night as a bright city flickers below you. Easy-drifting, yet still packing plenty of punch, the set is perfect for lovers--or those longing for one.

We know what you're thinking and yes, Club Butt is 100% legit. The musical venture of Butt, a pocket-sized periodical designed by, and for, the gay community, the sonic heading has done a brilliant job putting forth mixes that do the party scene proud. Their latest comes from electronic veteran Carlos Souffront, a founder of Gays Hate Techno and a purveyor of nothing but the most brilliant, decidedly vintage techno and electro on earth. The 808s click along perfectly on this one.
