Mixtape Mondays: Elijah Wood, Four Tet, Gordon Voidwell, Big Boi, Madlib, + So Much More
In this week's edition of Mixtape Mondays, we're providing you with so much new music that you're gonna need the week off just to digest it all. We have an afro-centric mix curated by actor Elijah Wood, a funky collection from Gordon Voidwell, a new tape from Jamaica-via-Brooklyn MC Jah Banks, a tribute to the legendary Yusef Lateef, Leftside Wobble dropping a new Acid Soul, a Big Boi 'Best Of' to celebrate his birthday, Madlib's latest mix for Benji B, and the second installment of FS Green's All Good series, not to mention new things from Four Tet & LeftO--10 mixes in all. Click through to find enough mixes to rid your workweek blues--and stay tuned because we have an extra special edition of Mixtape Mondays coming right afterward. Hint: it has to do with today's date February 10th.
Turns out when he's not appearing in FlyLo videos or getting medieval Hollywood star Elijah Wood (you know, the Hobbit guy) delves deep into a music nerd's love for music from the African continent. So of course Okayafrica tapped him for their Africa In Your Earbuds series. Stream below and get the backstory from OKA.
When we got word through the grapevine that Elijah Wood was record digging for vintage African vinyl at East Village spots like Good Records and the now-defunct Tropicalia In Furs we knew we had to get him on an Africa In Your Earbuds. No stranger to the music scene, Elijah has been known to DJ around — playing everything from “old soul and funk records, to international pysch music from Brazil and France” — and even started his own label Simian Records back in 2005. A known fan of Nigerian duo The Lijadu Sisters, Elijah sent over a heavily Naija and Ghanaian mixtape featuring K. Frimpong, Sonny Okosun and many others. He told us:I wanted to focus primarily on the original Nigerian and Ghanian records I’ve acquired (thank you Good Records, NYC) So many incredible African records are being reissued right now (!!) but it’s increasingly difficult to find original vinyl in good condition. This represents some of what I’ve found. (thanks to Zach Cowie and Jake Viator
OKP favorite and neo-romantic funkateer Gordon Voidwell hit us up with his latest mixtpae project a few days ago--a little black-bart inspired thing called Bad Etudes (get it, French students? Lisa Simpson would get it). Stream below or download via Afropunk.
LargeUp is the source for this new Brooklyn-Belize excursion from DJ Rampage (AKA Lauryn Hill's tour DJ--yes that's him in the background of her live Letterman appearance for Beatles week--I'll just add that Rampage killt a soundboy and a half with his warm up set at Lauryn's surprise show in Brooklyn last year, which I had the chance to catch live). Rampage is dropping this one to promote Lauryn's appearance at this week's 9 Mile (Marley) Festival and premiered it on LargeUp this morning. Read more and stream below:
LargeUp Premiere: Rampage Sound Global, Dubplate Sampler: Large up the sound like Rampage Sound Global and their latest project in the mixtape arena, a studio mix of strictly dubs and exclusives from the RSG vaults located deep in Belize, Brooklyn and Japan. Teaming up with your host and additional LargeUp family Micro Don on the mic and Orijahnal Vibes at the controls, this is no joke business. Micro stays on his signature soundsystem flow and a bag a specials from Johnny Osbourne, Tristan Palmer, Sizzla, Busy Signal, Demarco, Konshens, Big Ship and more make for another easy listen from DJ Rampage and the crew.
