Michelle Obama Delivers Final Speech As First Lady

Michelle Obama Delivers Final Speech As First Lady

Michelle Obama has given her final speech as First Lady of the United States.

Obama gave her closing remarks at the 2017 School Counselor of the Year event at the White House, an annual tradition that she started back in 2015.

"May I say for the last time officially, welcome to the White House," Obama begins. She then proceeds to thank everyone involved with her Reach Higher initiative, even taking a brief moment out of the speech to remind the audience of the time she rapped with Jay Pharoah to encourage learning among America's youth.

"When we first came up with this idea, we had one clear goal in mind," Obama said. "We wanted to make higher education cool."

Obama then offers words of encouragement, specifically at the young people throughout the country. "As I end my time in the White House, I can think of no better message to send our young people," Obama said. "For all the young people in this room and that are watching, know that this country belongs to you, to all of you. If you or your parents are immigrants, you are part of a proud American tradition."

"...I want our young people to know that they matter, that they belong," she concluded with. "So don't be afraid. Do you hear me, young people? Don't be afraid. Be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered. Empower yourself with a good education."

Michelle's final speech comes several days before her husband's own farewell speech, which will happen on January 10 in Chicago. But before that he and Michelle will host one last, big party at the White House, which will feature an assortment of special guests including: Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé, Jay Z, Oprah, Usher and many others.
