Michael B. Jordan Partners With Netflix To Bring ‘Raising Dion’ To The Masses
Michael B. Jordan is staying in the superhero business by producing this 10-episode, hourlong sci-fi black family drama called Raising Dion for Netflix.
Actor, and now producer, Michael B. Jordan has yet to hear any kudos for his role in Marvel’s The Black Panther, but that doesn’t matter because he’s keeping it real for the capes and the cowls. Partnering up with veteran showrunner Carol Barbee, writer-producer Michael Green (American Gods), MACRO and Netflix — MBJ will bring Raising Dion to the popular streaming service.
Based on Dennis Liu’s short film about a black single mother who discovers her young son’s multiple, constantly changing superhero abilities — Raising Dion is already green lit for 10 hourlong episodes. The sci-fi drama is amplified when Dion continues to attract attention for his magical, superhero-like abilities. Nicole, Dion’s mother, must try and keep her son’s gifts a secret with the help of her husband’s best friend Pat, and protect Dion from evil who want to examine and exploit his attributes.
“I started this project many years ago because I wanted to see more diverse representation on film and television and I’m excited to partner with Netflix, who I know shares that commitment,” Liu said in a press release. “More than ever, we need more stories told from different points of view and my hope with Raising Dion is to create a cinematic experience for all families that will lift your spirits and make you laugh and cry.”
MACRO, the company that is helping to produce Raising Dion, has raised $150M in equity and debt financing to produce four-to-six film and TV projects a year. Most recently, MACRO teamed up with Van Jones to produce Indivisible (working title), an hourlong political drama set to begin production in 2018.
