Meshell Ndegeocello has announced the release of her 10th studio album, Pour une âme souveraine (or for you non-French speakers, “For a sovereign soul”). The album is a dedication to Nina Simone for the incredible influence she had over music and politics. “She had things to say. She protested,” Meshell explains, “she was a loud, proud, black, female voice during a time when black female voices were not encouraged to make themselves heard.” In celebration of the album release, Meshell has shared her cover of Simone’s iconic track “Be My Husband” with NPR. Meshell is accompanied on vocals by singer songwriter Valerie June. Other guests on the album include Sinead O’Connor, Lizz Wright, Tracy Wannomae, Toshi Reagon and Cody ChesnuTT. The album will be available October 9th, in the meantime, stream the track below.
