Marvin Gaye's Estate Gains 50% Of "Blurred Lines" Future Royalties In New Ruling

Just when you thought you may never hear the words "Blurred Lines" again, a new ruling pops up and complicates matters beyond their already shitstorm-status. Yesterday, the residing Judge John A. Kronstadt published his post-trial ruling; a 56-page document that denies Pharrell & Robin Thicke's attorneys a retrial and Marvin Gaye's estate the requested block on sales of the single. Gaye's estate also lost over $2 million in the new ruling, reducing their damages to $5.3 million, but granting them 50% of future royalties from sales of the P & Thicke's 2013 smash. All of this, of course, comes months after the court ruled that "Blurred Lines" bit a little too hard from the feel of Marvin's "Got To Give It Up" and marked a dangerous legal precedent for musicians and producers alike, and perhaps most glaringly, omitted fellow credited writer T.I. from any punitive damages, even though he made a little more than $700,000 off the record. The new ruling holds T.I.P. and each artist's label liable for copyright infringement. Even with this new ruling, there's sure to be further litigation and plenty more bills dished-out over the months to come, so stay tuned for the next episode in the seemingly endless "Blurred Lines" saga.
