Marvel has been consistently and coolly dropping their hip-hop flavored remixed comic book covers for quite some time now.
The visuals have been crazy and have inspired artists to take their favorite characters such as Hulk, Deadpool, Captain America and Black Panther and merge them onto iconic album art covers such as Ghostface Killah, RZA, Rakim, Jay Z and Run The Jewels.
The most recent addition finds artists such as Theotis Jones, Marco D’Alfonso, Jim Cheung and others reimagining popular covers from Migos (Culture), 50 Cent (Guess Who’s Back) and The Firm with some really wicked results.
Two years ago, 2DBZ spoke with Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso about what prompted the company to create these covers, saying, “I just told [SVP for Print, Sales & Marketing] David Gabriel, who oversees our variant cover campaigns, ‘Hey, I want to do a hip-hop variant cover for every new launch from October through February.’ Not some times, every title. And he said, ‘Okay, just don’t do Vanilla Ice.’
Pretty sound advice if we say so ourselves.
Check out the variant covers below and keep an eye on this as it is one of the coolest things Marvel can do to tide us over until Thor 3 drops:
