New York by way of Toronto producer Marco Polo offers up an homage to Gang Starr‘s founder Guru in the aptly titled track “G.U.R.U.” featuring a narrative of rhymes from BK’s own Talib Kweli and an appearance from the other half of the BK duo DJ Premier. Boasting some oddly west coast production from the beast coast resident (boom bap, but that clap?) “G.U.R.U.” is a heartfelt account of the innumerable contributions the emcee made to the hip-hop community through Kweli’s eyes and words, taking us on a sojourn though the works of the innovative and influential Brooklyn MC-producer tandem. The video is a half lyric visual, half b-roll of Guru, and wholly sentimental, capturing how he touched us all without too much embellishment. Scroll down and enjoy this retrospective.
