After months of teasing us with beautifully constructed ballads, L.A. singer/songwriter, King avriel, comes through with her debut project, thesis. Thesis, in this case, serving as more than just some arbitrary title, the digital booklet to accompany the project (in thesis form) comprehensively lays out the full story behind the music as the plot thickens from track to track (can’t say I’ve seen it done like that before, very dope). Each song on the 11-track release can stand on its’ own, but you truly see the brilliance behind King avriel’s layered songwriting and storytelling abilities when you listen to the project from start to finish (“Caricatures,” “180,” “ Freedom,” and “Know It Alls” being my favorites). The music gets deep, exploring topics from homophobia, to rape, to modern day masculinity, and much much more. A careful listen will reveal all these themes, or you can easily just take it at surface level and still enjoy avriel’s sonic sensibilities. Producers on the project include The Internet, Oddisee, Sa’eed, NAPO, ATR777, King avriel, and more. Sure to be one of the best projects you’ve heard in awhile, dive in, below – and expect more greatness to come from this rising star.
