Chanting the chorus of Kendrick Lamar's incendiary single "Alright" as they raised fists and handmade signs into the cool fall air, demonstrators took to the streets of Washington D.C. Saturday to mark the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March this past Saturday, protesting state-sanctioned racial injustice, police brutality and the systemic racism that continues to beleaguer American society.
Social media posts captured the scene, including a few moving seconds of the "Alright" refrain.
This is not the first time that "Alright" has been deployed as a tool of racial resistance; protesters in Cleveland also chanted the To Pimp A Butterfly track back in July during a spontaneous reaction to the news that the officer in the Tamir Rice case would not face prosecution. Although that particular usage went viral via YouTube, the song has become something of an unofficial #BlackLivesMatter anthem at numerous events over the past few months.
