Pass The Popcorn: A New Jimi Hendrix Doc Hones In On His Legendary Atlanta Pop Festival Performance

July 4th, 1970: Jimi Hendrixis at peak guitar-god status; the highest paid musician in the land with the tightest and wildest stage show on the damn planet, culminating at the Atlanta Pop Festival with a massive revue of his classic material and cuts that would be released posthumously years down the line. And while many devout fans of the true purple patriarch (sorry, Prince) have likely already heard the madness of the Atlanta set, a new documentary will hone in on that legendary stage show. Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church (title taken from the Buddy Miles record that bears his production credit) will be aired on Showtime on September 4th with the DVD/Blu-Ray treatment landing October 30th, featuring even more never-before-seen-or-heard-outtakes from the televised set, not to mention testimony from Paul McCartney (who shoed-in Hendrix for his Monterey Pop debut after The Beatles declined to perform) frequent collaborator Steve Winwood and the festival's organizer Alex Cooley. What's more, the doc will follow the release of Freedom: Atlanta Pop Festival on August 28th, which is the first official release of the performance outside of the weird and wild world of bootlegging. That album will be pressed to a limited 5,000-count numbered vinyl set, the full track listing for which is listed below. Check back in the weeks ahead for the preorder links and be sure to tune in to catch all of the psychedelic goods on Showtime come September 4th.
