Janelle Monáe, Erykah Badu, Kendrick Lamar & More At The 2013 BET Awards
Performances from Janelle Monáe, Erykah Badu, Kendrick Lamar, R. Kelly, J. Cole and Miguel highlighted the 2013 BET Awards hosted by comedian Chris Tucker. Janelle Monáe wowed the audience with a show-stopping performance of her single “Q.U.E.E.N.” Erykah Badu joined her onstage at the halfway point to seal the deal, accompanied by a white poodle. Kendrick Lamar celebrated his award for Best New Artist with a performance. He lit up the stage with a bit of “Backseat Freestyle” before sliding into “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe”; this set was one of three performances from the Compton MC. He was joined onstage by Erykah Badu, who sang the hook to his gigantic single. J. Cole performed “Crooked Smile” before being joined by Miguel for his single “Power Trip.” Miguel appeared again with Mariah Carey for a her single “Beautiful.” Kicking things into overdrive, Robin Thicke hit the stage with T.I. and Pharrell to perform “Blurred Lines” – a performance that proved it might be a mistake to challenge T.I. to a dance battle. R. Kelly surprised fans with an a capella medley that included a full choir and some of his most famous tracks. While the bill was obviously stacked for the 2013 BET Awards, there was someone missing. Drake opted out of the event at the last minute – a move that reportedly left organizers scrambling. He took to Twitter to issue an apology, explaining that he was spending time with family and working to finish up his forthcoming LP. The audience recovered pretty well, thanks in part to the surprise reggae tribute BET dropped on the crowd – a performance that featured Dawn Penn, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Beenie Man and Elephant Man.
