Is Viola Davis Looking At Her First Oscar With Her 'Fences' Performance? [Trailer]
Last Friday, Paramount Pictures dropped a new trailer based on the August Wilson play, Fences, which stars Viola Davis and Denzel Washington. With the holidays now in our rearview, we offer a look at the powerful drama that is garnering a lot of Oscar buzz.
Fences, which is directed by Denzel Washington and adapted from August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, is set in 1950s Pittsburgh and finds Washington as a former Negro League ballplayer who now works as a trash man, struggling to provide for his family and come to terms with his life. Viola, as you can see in the trailer below, turns in a tour de force performance and if even one-third of the picture is like what you see in the clip then she’ll be a shoe-in for Best Actress when it comes time to dish out the Oscars.
For those who weren’t in the know, Fences has been a labor of love for the two-time Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington. His insistence that the film be directed by a person of color made headlines, as he managed to set up a deal with HBO to bring numerous August Wilson projects to the large-and-small screen. As the press who have already seen Fences can attest, the hype and buzz is real, so prepare your hankies and grab your family to see just how strong the ties that bind us are as Fences prepares for its nationwide release on Dec. 25.
Fences also stars Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley-Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson and Saniyya Sydney.
