LargeUp Audio: Eddie Murphy Teams w/ Beenie Man For Bright New Reggae Tune "Wonna Deez Nites"
Comedic G.O.A.T. Eddie Murphy continues his streak of kinky with the bright and buoyant new single "Wonna Deez Nites" featuring dancehall's once-and-future king Beenie Man. I know, I know. Many of us would rather see the idol of out "delirious" youth on stage instead of running the risk of ending up in the same video as his daughter at some point in the next five years. But you've gotta hear this thing out. Murphy's voice is still more than intact; a calm, cool croon that bears the influence of modern-day rootsmen like Beres Hammond and Glen Washington, while remaining recognizably and indelibly Eddie. Murphy's voice in fact, lifts the authentic one-drop track to stratospheric levels, with Beenie Man providing a perfect deejay counterpoint.
Murphy has been trying his hand in music since well before The Sherman Klump era. So if you've been taken aback at all by his output over the last few years, you need to reacquaint yourself with some of those infectious pop (and yes, reggae--Shabba Ranks, anybody?) inflected records and come to terms with it as a passion of his for damn near three decades now. And as far as this writer's concerned, the more the merrier. Whatever gets this man back to the stage is just fine by me, and there's far worse ploys to do so than waving your lighter through a few sunny reggae odes.
