Video: Earl Sweatshirt – “Chum”

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Earl Sweatshirt goes harder than immigrants work (his words, not mine) in the new video for "Chum" (as in 'bloke' but also as in 'shark-bait', I'm assumin'). The video is deceptively simple but like his opening bar "something sinister to it" makes it work. The brilliant pacing, cinematography and the simple yet flawlessly executed special effects all add up to a perfect match for Earl's flow. Moving through empty midnight streets and loading docks from a frog's POV, the camera's wandering eye is met by everyday people and objects that are all somehow a little off; upside down, backwards or disjointed in scale, creating a sort of nocturnal, bizarro-world version of rap's back-alley precincts. Which kind of feels like Earl's natural habitat. Because let's face it his whole persona is kind of a nocturnal, bizarro-world version of one of the characters from the Fat Albert Gang. Call it Fat Albert Nights. Watch below and make sure you have your weirdcoat on.
