For the past two and a half years I've been obsessed with '80s synthpop duo The System. Upon hearing their track "You Are In My System," I've just about listened to the group almost every day, hoping that at some point I'd discover a contemporary equivalent to Mic Murphy and his emotional, lover boy lyrics.

Well, today I made that discovery. Although he's more eclectic than Murphy, Duckwrth's first single "Get Uugly," from his forthcoming I'm Uugly project, reminds me of The System. Sonically, there's those bubbly, moody synths and upbeat electronic percussion that The System became popular for. And aesthetically Duckwrth almost looks like the spiritual successor to Murphy, wearing tight white jeans and a white jacket that's painted over.

But where the two differ is in Duckwrth's delivery: part triplet flow raps, part soulful croons, which is on full display in the video for "Get Uugly."

The almost three and a half minute music video directed by Mancy Gant, features the artist singing and dancing in front of an abandoned space with the sun shining down on him. Interspersed in that are quick shots of him holding his "Female Muse" Vanessa Vigil, and doing choreographed dance moves with "Dance Partner" Channel3.

"Get Uugly" comes right at the height of summertime fun. The days are hot and long; the rooftop parties are endless and last as long as people are willing to pitch in for alcohol — the track is the embodiment of the bliss that comes with the season, particularly that of finding a summer fling.

Duckwrth's I'm Uugly is expected to drop August 26. The Los Angeles rapper is currently on tour with Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals, supporting him on the remainder of his tour. Check out the video below, as well as an extended version of the track featuring Georgia Anne Muldrow, here.
