It was the supergroup that never was that showed signs of life, as DJ Khaled continued his winning streak by bringing Jay Z, DMX and Ja Rule together for a once-in-a-lifetime appearance. The We the Best music mogul made this miracle of epic proportions happen during the final show of Beyoncé‘s ‘Formation’ world tour, which took place in East Rutherford, New Jersey at MetLife Stadium.

In a backstage video, which you can see below, Khaled had Jay Z, Ja Rule and DMX posse up for a photo taken by Atlantic Records‘ President of Black Music, Mike Kyser. For those not old enough to remember, these three titans of rap were angling to become a supergroup called, Murder Inc., after the success of their collaborative track titled, “Murdergram,” which dominated the New York rap scene.

The hype of their association led to the classic XXL Magazine cover in 1999, which heralded their arrival as the best and the brightest in the game.

For many reasons, the situation didn’t blossom into an album. According to Ja Rule, who spoke about the formation of Murder Inc. in 2014, “We couldn’t get X and Jay in the same room.” Their storied battle in a New York pool hall carried over into their careers. “It was hard to get all of us into a room to do what we needed to do. We did a few records together and those records will always be classics to a lot of people in the history of hip-hop,” Ja Rule said. “I wish that album would’ve come to fruition. It would’ve been real dope.”

When you press play on the video below, you can even slightly hear X mention the rap battle at the Bronx pool hall. Apparently the man known as Dark Man X doesn’t forget the slightest details, saying to Jay, “You know, I still gotta get you on the pool table, man.” X even quotes back to a verse from one of the few songs that exists with the trio as a group from Ja Rule’s “It’s Murda,” which you can enjoy underneath.
