Dam-Funk Gets Serious With This Funk, Shares Bonus Cut "Compos mentis"

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

There are all kinds of good reasons for staying up late on Twitter, when inhibitions get lowered and the culture collectively speaks its mind in brasher tones. One funky soul who does just that is Dam-Funk, and on Monday night the West Coast producer went on a bit of a tear, professing anew his devotion to making authentic music and, in the middle of it all, releasing a brand new archival track.

Dubbed "Compos mentis," the track is a short but oh-so-sweet exposition of Dam-Funk's skills, and it bounces forth and back with dry, slight drums beneath an astrally-projected synth. It's not quite as refined or realized as the material we heard on the man's latest LP Invite The Light, but we're sure as hell glad to hear it in the public realm. Dam-Funk's rough drafts are funkier than most anything anyone else is putting out on the official.

Listen to "Compos mentis" below, and if you for some lucky reason find yourself in Asia this month, scope Dam-Funk's upcoming tour itinerary for a sampling of that sushi-fueled funk. Invite the Light is available on iTunes.
