Black Thought, Okayplayer, and  The Smoking Section present:
COLLECT YOUR THOUGHTS, the ULTIMATE BLACK THOUGHT COMPILATION CONTEST

Black Thought has been releasing recorded music since 1992 and has long since established himself as one of the most fierce and prolific emcees in history. In fact, give the man a hand.. no, seriously, give him a hand, he has lost track of how many features and solo joints (anything that did not appear on an album from The Roots) and needs your help…

The challenge to you, compile the most comprehensive list of Black Thought features and solo tracks for a chance to win one (or a combination of) the following prizes:

– tickets to a taping of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon with access to meet Black Thought and the rest of the band behind-the-scenes
– sit in on a studio session with Black Thought and the Money Making Jam Boys
– Tickets and backstage to the next Roots show in your area
– Autographed Roots swag (t-shirts, CDs, Vinly)

The contest starts today, January 7th, and runs through Friday, January 28th.  There are two requirements to be eligible to win. Once you feel like you have established the complete list of Black Thought features and solo, non-Roots joints, compile them in a Word or text doc in a numbered list (order does not matter). The trick is, you must also have mp3s (any digital format for iTunes is fine) of ALL the tracks on your list. Whoever submits the most comprehensive list will be deemed the winner but they must then send a ZIP/SIT/RAR file of all the mp3s on their list to win prizes or a new winner will be selected.

Email your submissions (lists only, no mp3) to collectyourthoughts@gmail.com

Here are a few to get you started:

Ghostface Killah “In Tha Park” feat. Black Thought
Young Chris “Philly Sh*t (Remix)” feat. Eve, Meek Mill, & Black Thought
Chrisette Michele “Let Freedom Reign” feat. Talib Kweli & Black Thought

A very special thanks to our friends at http://smokingsection.uproxx.com/TSS/

  • got my collection in only took 4 hrs , cant wait to see what im missing

  • tom hayes

Really? A simple email to me would have worked 🙂

  • shawn fischer

is there a difference btw black thought solo/collabs/unreleased
    vs/
roots songs that arent on a roots albums

cause if thats the case ill have to resend that list

  • DC

Just started and I’ve already got 27… what kind of numbers are you guys getting?

  • Z Dub

So we only need to submit the lists for now right?? and then if we get picked we need to back it up with a zip file or do you want us to upload the zip file to megaupload or mediafire and include the link on our list??

  • Z Dub, that is correct.
DC, we actually dont know, but we will have an idea once we (Black Thought included) start reviewing submissions
Shawn, Roots song of any variety do not count
dj crossfader, we are looking to get the most comprehensive collection… it will be more than a CDs worth

  • DJ Equity

Headed to the lab right now…me and my boy Shan might have to put out a Black Thought Box Set.

  • Gordon Reid

Im wondering if we make a mistake and accidentally send a Roots song, will we be disqualified?

  • Sean

Just from a quick iTunes search I have 70+ songs… Haven’t checked for doubles from various compilations but 60 unique ones for sure

  • jane jakins

    great tunes

  • chyren

this has got to be the dopest contest.. black thought my favorite mc..

  • Twi
  • tom hayes

Question: Should we include guest spots by The Roots if Black Thought is prominently featured and another MC is on the track. The perfect examples of this are Bahamaida’s “Da Jawn” and Guru’s “Lift Your Fist.”

Or should we just include EVERYTHING we have and let you sort it out?

  • we want EVERYTHING. no, you will not be disqualified for Roots tracks, but try not to send them. number your lists people! thanks. trivia bonus contest being posted tomorrow.

  • tom hayes

Dantana: This contest is getting more confusing by the minute! (i say this a little tongue in cheek – but also a little concerned.)

Be prepared for Internet nerdery arguments to come at the end. Because I have over 400 items at the moment!

  • tom hayes

    I meant 4,000. Or did I???

  • Gordon Reid

How in the hell do you have 400 Black thought tracks, i might as well give up at 85

  • tom hayes

    Gordon,
    It’s simple. I was LYING 🙂 Don’t give up!

  • Gordon Reid

    Yessss, back in the game

  • AJ

Just submitted the list, I have high hopes at 100+.. Unlike Tom Hayes, I’m not bullshittin

  • jjj

not trying to be a pain, but i didn’t quite catch the answer to tom hayes regarding whether to include songs that on tracklists say “feat. the roots.” if a song by another artist/emcee “features” the roots but essentially has black thought rhyming on the track, does that still count? thanks for your help. this should be a fun contest.

  • maw

This does not include live appearances right? Only studio stuff?

  • jjj

@maw: that’s another question i was gonna ask… tunes that only appear in live form, like the j period live mixtape. might be a stretch, but i’d rather find out now than kick myself later for not putting it on when it counted.

  • tom hayes

I just sent in my list.

As per the contest instructions I have included “(anything that did not appear on an album from The Roots)” on my list. I did not include radio edits, fan made remixes, or mixtapes that included only previously released material. Nor did not include material that was on television and then ripped as an audio file and traded. I also did not include radio shows that were never released in any other format or audience recordings form live events.

This contest will likely come down to the judging.

Or someone who lives in Philly might beat us all with Philly only releases/mixtapes/etc.

  • tom hayes

    Shut em down!

  • tom hayes

Is the contest entry period officially closed? I’d like to share my findings with others and see what tracks might be out there.

  • Maw

I’d like to see what everyone had too. Any word when we can expect the winner(s)? How many did you have on your list Tom?

  • tom hayes

Maw – depending on how they judge I have between 180 and 220.

If they are SUPER lax (read:”anything that did not appear on an album from The Roots”) I submitted around 340.

    • maw

damn man. Cant wait to see your list. I came in about 130.

  • tom hayes

I’m sick of waiting. Here’s a copy of my the spreadsheet I based my entry off of. Link: http://bit.ly/efqbn1
It’s Wednesday after the Friday submissions deadline – hopefully no one will be able to modify their entry based on this post.

But NOT SHARING this information seems silly. We’re FANS not fanatics.

    • tom hayes

Oh, post your list (or email me) I’d like to see if there was anything I missed.

  • maw

well I had a feeling this would happen. you and I have pretty much identical lists with the exception that I didn’t include all the remixes if Black thought was on the original version. Also didn’t include the radio and live stuff unless it was out on a actual cd. I have all that stuff too, should have just included everything but the rules to this were super vague and didn’t know what kind of list they were going to be judging off of or just by memory. Oh well, congrats Tom.

    • tom hayes

I think it’s just going to come down to the judging criteria. — And then maybe even a random drawing.

If the “contest” would have been a single week they’re may have been more differences in the lists.
