Okayplayer celebrates world-renowned poet, professor and activist Sonia Sanchez today on the occasion of her 79th birthday. With news of her birthday comes the launch of a crowdfunding campaign to fund a documentary about her life and works via Kickstarter. The film entitled BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez chronicles the evolution of the woman with razor blades between her teeth; a laureate assigned to the exposed guts, frayed edges and pilled fabric of life who does not mince words but mashes potent statements into fine pulp and feeds them to the masses in a pill often as bittersweet and blistered as it is perennially beautiful. Her gentle speech routinely belies phrases crafted to cut clear to the white meat, proving Sanchez a fierce revolutionary whose most lethal weapons are not made of metal.

The documentary about her life has been in production for the past three years with help from a few donors. Filming for the documentary began when Sanchez was 76 years old. Filmmakers Barbara Attie, Janet Goldwater and Sabrina Schmidt Gordon have set a somewhat ambitious fundraising goal of $55,000 - the price tag will cover the expense of editing, color correction, mixing, graphics and licensing music and archival footage - in order to see that the film is completed by their 2014 deadline of her 80th birthday. The campaign has raised over $4000 since going live this week. The project will be fully funded as long as they are able to reach their $55,0000 goal by the deadline of October 9th.
