Black Thought of The Roots circa 1999

What can we say  it’s Throwback Thursday and this “Rage Is Back” freestyle got us in a Black Thought state of mind this week and various listener’s speculations about the freestyle vs written status of the “Kill a Mockingbird” bars got us thinking about other illustrious headtop lyrics from Mr. Tariq Trotter. And that reminded us of this ill jawn our boy DJ Treats uploaded, a radio rip from Stretch Armstrong‘s Hot97 show, recorded around the time of Things Fall Apart, which puts it somewhere late last millenium. An enviable display of Thought’s lyricism and undefeated freestyle prowess–once he says “C’mon man” its on for a good 2 minutes 30 seconds (some MCs take a year to write a solid 2 minutes of rhymes). Enjoy the site-specific lyrics and general vibes below in the spirit of Throwback Thursday and if anybody remembers/recognizes the piano-driven instrumental Stretch is running in the background, let us (and Treats know)!
