The Black Star line came into port in Paris last week and whenever the flight paths of TAFKA Mos Def and Talib Kweli intersect for an onstage reunion you know the results will be legendary. They were. Fortunately for Okayplayer and the history books, our OKP Paris bureau chief Mr. Mass was on hand to document the proceedings, resulting in this truly iconic photo gallery. That word ‘iconic’ gets thrown around quite a bit but I use it here with zero exaggeration; that shot of Yasiin and Kweli framed by blackness with fists raised in amandla! salute is strictly Mexico-City-1968-Olympics status. Personally, I will take that one shot over like three corny Mandela biopics. Here’s what Mass had to say about the show:
“It was a crazy night; the chemistry between those two still works insane and from what Mos said it was the best crowd of the whole Black Star mini-Europe tour. The show was an MC*5 production and the DJ was Big Von. Big Abdul (the bearded guy and Mos’ DJ) was there as a guest but didn’t perform. John Forte was there as well and the opening and very impressive act was Stone’s Throw artist Jonwayne. Black Star performed for 1 hour, 30 minutes and got the crowd wild.”
Et Voila. Click through the gallery above to relive the show and while you are up do yourself a favor an catch Mass & Simsima’s latest No(W))FUTUR mix (007) on this week’s Mixtape Mondays.
