We all knew Kid Cudi was slowly morphing into a rock band, but now that transformation appears to be complete. WZRD is the recording name of Cudi’s reverse-rockist collaboration with Dot da Genius and “Brake” is the first official release under that name. (Really, “Perfect is the Word” from back in the spring is the first-ever WZRD song, but back then they were still just Cudi and Dot). Although I’m not necessarily a fan of some of Cudi’s darker gothic conceits, so far I’m all in favor of these lo-fi rock experiments. For proper comparison between caterpillar-Cudi and iron-butterfly Cudi, play “Brake” (below) back to back with “Mr. K.I.D.” a circa-2001 track from his recent Rap Hard mixtape/throwback (after the jump).
