This is the happiest song I have heard to date from Idle Warship and coincidentally one of my favorite, too. It is Res and Kweli so it still has some bite and a slightly bittersweet tinge to what is basically a dope pop melody, kind of on some Stereolab shit. But it would not be crazy to imagine this song playing in the party montage of a hollywood movie or even a beer commercial. A cool beer. Somebody throw some beer money at me, I got ideas! The new Idle Warship LP Habits of the Heart drops November 1st (but you can stream it now if you want to sign it up for Spotify).

  • You Big Faker!!!

Say what you will about rappers like Weezy and Drake “sippin’ syrup” and smoking “purp,” they have never been so high that they would go from a classic like “Train of Thought” to this hot garbage. Talib, you are incredibly talented and for whatever reason (largely the fickleness and ignorance of most consumers of “Hip Hop”) you have not achieved mainstream, commercial success. As the years progress, you get older and it becomes necessary, if you intend on achieving it, to constantly reinvent yourself. But that comes at a cost to your musical legacy. It’s time to accept the harsh reality that you will not become unreasonably rich off of your gift and will instead be rewarded with critical acclaim years after your retirement. There is no need to try to appeal to new bases in the hopes of catching a fire and restarting your career death clock in a new genre bracket. Be an MC. Be a living legend. be the best at what you do. Teach through poetry. Uplift through integrity. Make the music that moves people. Live humbly and enjoy the riches of a career founded on a solid body of work and the love and adoration of your fans. And when you’re done doing that… tell Mos to do it too. Cuz ya’ll brothers are going way off the reservation.

    One Love!
