The 2012 American Beatbox Championship
After hearing and seeing Doug E. Fresh, Ready Rock C and Buffy of the Fat Boys as a kid, I took up beatboxing as a hobby. Can't say I was that great at it, but I could do recognizable interpretations of breakbeats like "Impeach The President" or "Funky Drummer." Perhaps with a little more practice I might have been good enough to be a contestant at this year's American Beatbox Championships being held in New York City on August 12th at Le Poisson Rouge.
Now in its third year, the World Beatbox Association's American Beatbox Championship will bring America's top 16 beatboxers who will battle it out live on stage in fine 8-Mile fashion. Last year's winner, J-Flo of Long Island, NY is back to defend his title as champion. He faces competition from FriScO (CA), Spencer Polanco (NY), Rizumik (NY), Heaven (GA), We11s (MO), Phatlips (UT), Sung Lee (NJ), Stubble (NM), Orthobox (DE), Amit (NY), DrC (CA), NYCBeatbox (NY), SyzyGy (CA), EVMB (CA), HARM (CA).
Also performing at the event are Grammy-winning singer Maya Azucena, America's Got Talent finalist Butterscotch, two-time Canadian Beatbox Champion and 2012 finalist of Canada's Got Talent KRNFX,Jessica Kaya, Range Da Messenga, Eternia, Akim Funk Buddha, and Bajah of Bajah & the Dry Eye Crew. Legendary beatbox master Rahzel will be holding down the judges table!
The fun kicks off Saturday, August 11th with the opening night Open Mic event at Littlefield in Brooklyn featuring J-Flo, Three Man ILL, Word of Mouf, and Fresh Baam Bada . Stop by, hop on the mic, and show off your own beatbox skills!
