Afrika Bambaataa

Who says DJs can’t be professors? The South Bronx’s very own Afrika Bambaataa has recently been welcomed into the faculty at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. This marks the first time a hip-hop legend has ever been appointed a working position in a major university. Cornell couldn’t have made a better choice — Bambaataa is known for his pioneering work in the early development of hip-hop and has always played a major role in hip-hop culture. The university’s library is said to have the largest archive of hip-hop history, from it’s birth to now. Bambaataa will serve a 3-year term in which he’ll visit the campus several times per year to speak to students and perform.

This is not “the first time a hip hop legend has ever been appointed a position at a major university.” Wyclef Jean was a visiting fellow at Brown University from 2010-2011.

PEACE, all. Just to clarify, we made sure to say that Bam’s appointment was the first for a Hip Hop pioneer of his stature at a major university in our official press announcement: news.library.cornell.edu/news/120814/bambaataa

‘Nuff respect to Wyclef, 9th Wonder, Popmaster Fabel, Mare 139, Bun B, and all the other major Hip Hop artists who have also taught in universities!
