'African All Stars' Collection Brings Together Femi Kuti, Tony Allen, Fantasma + More

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Fresh off the international presses comes the African All Stars compilation, a brand new album that brings together some of the legends of afrobeat and highlife stylings, as well as some very impressive and rising newcomers, all under one top-shelf release.

The set, which was released earlier this week, features tracks from Fela Kuti's longtime go-to drummer Tony Allen, as well as Femi Kuti, Ghanian powerhouse Ebo Taylor, and Ethiopian jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke. What's more, the compilation packs Orchestra Baobab's laid-back groove "Jin Ma Jin Ma," the dusty desert blues of Tinariwen's "Nezagh Ajbal," and Fantasma's psych-rock collaboration with Moonchild, "Eye of the Sun."

Across 30 tracks, African All Stars engages with some of the best, most forward-thinking music to come out of Africa in the last 45 years. Its playlist has something for every music fan and serves as an excellent introductory lesson for anyone whose library might be lacking in the African rhythms department. Compiled by digital music distributor Believe Digital and presented in part by our cohorts Okayafrica and French clothing label Babatunde., the set's both informative and simply a joy to listen to. You can purchase African All Stars: The Best Indie & Alternative African Recordings From 1970 To 2015 on iTunes, and enjoy a stream of the entire playlist below.
